THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE MOVING TO BARCELONA

FIESTA DE LAS FLORES 2015 IN GIRONA

Can anyone think of a better way to celebrate Spring than with colorful flower installations?

“Fiesta de las Flores” or “Temps de Flors” [in Catalan] is celebrated in Girona in May, annually. And it’s already happening! You can join its 60th anniversary celebrations between May, 9th and 17th in Girona’s old town.

Fiesta de las Flores

It’s one of the most beautiful and cheerful feasts in Spain. And it’s spectacular! The streets and monuments of Girona’s old town are decorated with fresh flowers and floral installations, very creative installations! You will find there many interesting ideas for your garden or terrace. Expositions made with string, cloth, pieces of bicycle or wood draw attention of crowds coming to see them from all over Spain, France and many other places.

Free sightseeing

All the expositions are for free. The installations are situated on the streets, in the parks, gardens and also in museums and other monuments which are open to public only on this occasion. So it is a great opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Girona. Of course, there are a lot of people visiting and we got across long queues to museums. So, if you’ll get tired of the crowd, my advise is to go up the hill to the gardens to take a break. There is a beautiful German Garden “Jardins dels Alemanys” which is well worth a visit along with the “Torre Gironella” gardens. They are situated in the northern part of the old town, up from the Cathedral. You’ll go along old fortifications rising among green plants and bushes, sight quite unlikely as for the dry Spanish landscape we already got used to.

Here you’ll find the plan of the exposition: Girona map.

Weather conditions

It’s already hot in here. We’ve been there this Saturday, May, 9th and it was 30°C (86°F) and sunny. In May the temperatures can easily reach 30°C (86°F), so don’t forget to apply sunscreen and take a bottle of water with you.

How to get to Girona from Barcelona?

By car: it takes some 1:20hs taking the highway (charges are applied of about 6,45 eur one way). If you are not in a hurry you can also take the express road which goes along the highway. The trip is a bit longer but with some nice views and for free.

By train: there are some special discounts for the visitors of “Fiesta de las Flores” by Renfe train! Don’t miss it! Check it out here: Renfe train discount. Travel by train lasts only 38 minutes.

So, take your camera and have a great trip to Girona!
