THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE MOVING TO BARCELONA

8 MOST USEFUL APPS WHEN LIVING IN BARCELONA

When moving to a new place let’s not forget how helpful the technology can be. In this article I’d like to share with you my list of mobile applications which will make your life easier and more fun.

Here are 8 MOST USEFUL APPS WHEN LIVING IN BARCELONA:

  1. TMBApp

The official Barcelona public transport app. After downloading it and creating an account you can configure it to work best for you. Choose metro and bus lines, the ones you use most frequently, and get the access to their timetables. You will also get notifications with alerts about “your lines”. There are also options to: get directions, service alerts, customer support, etc.
Available in Catalan, Spanish and English.
    Google Play – goo.gl/3flgr8
    iOS – goo.gl/YW7su2

  2. WhatsApp Messanger

You probably already have this popular messenger installed on your smartphone. If not, it’s time you accepted the fact that from now on it will become one of the most used communication tools for you. Whatsapp is extensively popular all over Spain and has dominated the market. Many of your Spanish friends would say that they would write to you later in the evening, taking it for granted that it would be via Whatsapp. They wouldn’t absolutely consider you not having it. The app is so popular here that many of companies and public institutions introduced Whatsapp as one of their official communication channels.
    Available in Spanish and English:
    Google Play – goo.gl/nNn314
    iOS – goo.gl/ylGctj

  3. Bicing

Bicing app is absolutely necessary if you use Barcelona bike sharing service. And if you don’t, you should start using it. In one of our articles (read it here) we mentioned how pleasant, quick and easy means of transport Bicing is. The app helps you track the bicycles availability in real time at all the stations. When logged in to your account, you can check the history of your bicycle rentals. In case of any problems, call the Customer Support.
Available in Catalan and Spanish only:
    Google Play – goo.gl/HdxgO6
    iOS – goo.gl/Ea0AjW

  4. Meetup

This application is well-know all over the world but its particular value is shown after you end up in a new place, often away from you friends and relations. Barcelona is a vibrant city and it would be a sin to stay home. Don’t know what to do in your free time, don’t have anyone with whom to jog, play basketball, beach volleyball or maybe fancy an evening with wine, tapas and a good movie? On Meetup you will find groups with similar interests. Many of them are expats just as you, so chances are you will find common ground. It’s worth to try it at least once. Among my friends Mojito Party is one of the most popular meetups. Every week one of the popular bars organizes a party for Barcelona newbees: Mojito for 4 EUR, great music and a lot of interesting people!

The most popular secondhand service in Spain, to sell and buy used stuff. When moving to arcelona sometimes there’s no worth buying only new stuff. Many flats for rent are with no furniture, if it is your case, it may be worth buying necessary things in great price on this service.

  6. Wallapop

Yet another app for secondhand buy & sell. In the recent years it became very popular in Spain. Interesting option is that you can look up stuff based on your location. Find what you are looking for and set up a meeting with the seller living just few blocks from you. Easy, isn’t it?

  7. ING DIRECT España. Banca Móvil

Our bank application. If you are used to doing all your banking transactions through your computer and mobile app, this is a good choice. Banks in Spain deserve a separate article, indead. Long story made short, if you don’t like queues and paying visits to banks now and then, learn more about this bank. The app is great, clear and easy even if you don’t know Spanish well. You can do most of your transactions online, including ordering debit or credit card. If you receive your salary (Spanish: nomina) on this account then most of the transactions are also for free, not to worry about high interest rates frequently to be paid in other Spanish and Catalan banks.

  8. WordReference.com

Very handy and complete dictionary app with many languages in it, English and Spanish being among them. Most of them translated to and from English but French and Portuguese are also translated directly to Spanish. It also has options to conjugate verbs and find a word definition in Spanish, English and Italian, for more advanced students.

  • You should add Citymapper to this list. Not only does it have all of the transport lines and bicing stops on it, but it works better than Google Maps in regards to getting you places around the city. It’s been my most-used since I arrived here last year 🙂
